Lake Louise and Johnston Canyon: Banff, Alberta

Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014
We drove from Great Falls, Montana to Canmore, Alberta. It took us eight hours.
My mom treated us to a wonderful meal at Crazyweed.

Jonathan spent his day in Calgary. His drive was twenty minutes shorter because he was not towing the trailer. He met a former work colleague who is studying in Calgary for the year.

Mom, Kathleen and I spent the afternoon at Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Mom treated us to a Fairmont brunch. WOW. Then, we explored the hotel and its' terraces.

We went for a walk along Lake Louise.

We explored Johnston Canyon http://www.banff.ca/index.aspx?NID=648
At Lake Louise, yesterday, we encountered what looked like a chipmunk with racing stripes, but it was the size of a squirrel. Mystery solved today! And, to think, I only thought chipmunks could have those racing stripes!
Kathleen tried to cheer up Smokey!

The Climb! When Mom visited the ice fields in 1969, she did not walk far from the parking lot.

  1. Oh wow, I don't remember having to climb to the Columbian ice sheild in 2005.
So nice Jean was able to visit, looks like you had lovely weather for hiking around Banff/Lake Louise. I like to picture of the Chateau from the opposite side of the lake, since that perspective is rarely presented!

  2. We have so many memories of that area close to the Ice Sheild including a snow storm in July 1969 when cars had to pull over in Jasper and people were literally sleeping on the floors of the hotels and motels close to the highway. The snow brought the Elk down to the road to forage for food..
