Lucchesi and Lagunitas: Petaluma, California

Tuesday, November 11, 2014
The farmer's market in Petaluma revealed the name of the orange fruit we saw during our walking tour yesterday.

 A visit to Lucchesi Park

At the Lagunitas Brewery: Free tastings and free tour

One of the workers adopted a guide dog that was not suited for his assignment because of an unfortunate  habit of peeing in shoes. The worker has diabetes and he noticed that the dog barked before his sugar lows. His dog became his early warning sign. Now dogs are trained "to use their phenomenal sense of smell and alert hypoglycaemic episodes in persons with diabetes". http://www.dogs4diabetics.com/about-us/

  1. I'm curious, did you try the persimmons? I see they have some cut up there to try. I try one once, it was horrible. But I heard they needed to be cooked, possibly not true if they are there to try. Maybe mine weren't ripe?
So totally amazing about the dog and being able to detect low blood sugar levels. Wow!

    1. J&I did try them. We didn't find they had much flavour. I since learned that this Fuyu variety is less astringent-- "furry tasting" than other varieties. A local magazine from the grocery store gave some recipe ideas and the author encouraged Californians to embrace the persimmon b-c in many places it's considered exotic! Perhaps, Californians are also not too enamoured of this fruit! Isn't that something about "diabetes dogs"? Do you know service dogs are also trained for children w/ autism? I met a family whose son has a service dog. Before he was matched w. his dog, the boy would run from his family and there was significant concern about the boy's safety. When the dog is wearing his vest, he's a working dog, and stays close to the boy. The boy now is more secure and more independent. I can send you a link w. more info if you're interested ;-D
