Redwood Coast near Crescent City, California

Monday, November 3, 2014
We stopped at the Crescent City Information Center for suggestions about trails to hike in the park.

First we explored a nearby park and some of the coastline in Crescent City.

Squirrels on a beach. For me, that's a first!  I watched a dispute over territory or food ownership. I'm not sure who was encroaching on whom, but a squirrel chased some gulls away. Then this gull repositioned himself near the disputed area.

"What is this?" we asked the guide at the marine mammal center.

The guide pointed to two men with bags over their shoulders full of frisbees. Later, we saw them tossing frisbees from one basket to another across the field.

From the lighthouse cliff, we saw a pair of pelicans fly above the ocean.

Haven't asked about the identity of this...

The guide welcomed us to the center, explained the center's mission of rescue, rehabilitation and education and introduced us to Diego. http://www.northcoastmmc.org

The center believes that Diego's injuries were caused by a boat propeller. He was stitched up and given antibiotics.  He will be returned to the ocean this weekend.
Near the top of the page is a photo of Diego from Nov. 3
Scroll about a 1/3 of the way down for Diego's photo from Sept. 30

We drove Howland Hill Road, an unpaved road, for two miles to reach the trailhead of The Boy Scout Tree Trail. The road was one lane. The drivers of the vehicles we met slowed down as we approached and then we took turns waiting to pass or be passed. One driver backed up for us so that we would get around him.  Today was my first glimpse of these "ancient giants" and it was my first time wishing I was in a convertible to have more of a view!

Warning!! If you are squeamish about crawly, slimy beings, skip over the next two pictures!!

For those who are still with me, here are some photos from our trip to the grocery store.
