Bryce Canyon National Park

Monday, September 8, 2014
Due to a weather forecast that included lightening, rain, and possible flash floods, we were advised by the park ranger to plan hiking for another day. She recommended starting at the far end of the park, then driving back (towards the park entrance) and stopping at the overlooks.

We hiked the Bristlecone Loop Trail, a short hike of 1.6 km that was close to our truck in case we needed to rush back. The only roars we heard were from aircraft above us!

Bristlecone Trees have long life spans. We saw one tree that is 1,600 years old! When branches and portions of the trunk appear dead, other limbs may function as the main trunk. This helps the tree survive times of stress: drought, fire and damaging storms.

We met Erin and Ken from California.

Erin took this photo of us. "Agua" means water, a significant word for us!

  1. I heard about the possibility of flash floods in the area at our weekly craft group of all places. Another member told me her brother was advised to change his plans... I thought she must of misunderstood where I said that you were camping.

  2. At our St. George/Hurricane KOA campsite, the 1st day we drove in, a bulldozer was fixing the entrance road. Fortunately, for us, most of the repair was to the left side of the road; we were travelling right... Also a closed trail in Zion. Other than that, we have not seen anything like what has happened in Arizona and Nevada.

  3. HI Catherine and Jonathon- this is Ken and Erin from Cali! Your travel blog and photos are awesome. We were fortunate to meet the both of you (and Tripper too)! After Bryce Canyon, we traveled to Capitol Reef and Escalante and experienced the landscape via scenic backroads in the Tacoma. I have a picture of the both of you when we met. Let me know where to send it. Also, when you get to San Diego, give us a call to meet.
Best Regards and Safe Travels. Ken and Erin

  4. Hi Ken & Erin, Great to hear from you! Thanks for your blog comments! Capitol Reef was recommended to us, but not enough time to drive the scenic 3 hrs. I'll Facebook Erin our e-mail address. Take Care. Catherine (&Jonathan)
