Paths Less Traveled

Friday, February 20, 2015
We drove on a dirt road to the Sandia Mountain. At times, the road was slushy when we were driving in the sun,  and icy when we drove through a shady area.
Here we stopped for a hike to a cave.

Jonathan explored the cave. I kept watch below!

                                                                       Be careful!
Our drive up the mountain:

                                                                almost at the top!

At the top of the mountain, we stopped at Sandia Crest House. There is a restaurant, gift store, and interpretation area.

Then we drove on paved road to the community of Madrid.

We met an art gallery owner and textile artist who is one of the original artists to "set up shop" in Madrid.
"Diana and Mel Johnson packed up their young family and ended up in this abandoned coal mining town in the early 70’s. Both with Art Institute of Chicago degrees, the gutsy couple moved into the big car-and-truck repair garages and thus began a long journey of remodeling and building their gallery that is the centerpiece of Madrid and home for over 100 artists and 50 fiber artists, mostly from the Southwest." http://www.steppinoutnewmexico.com/printout.php?articleid=566

From Madrid, we drove along a narrow dirt road, Route 57, to Interstate 25. We drove through the town of Cerrillos.

This was our view from Cerrillos to the highway:
