City of Rocks

Thursday, February 5, 2014

Norin, Jonathan and I traveled to City of Rocks State Park,  30 miles south of Silver City.

"It has rock formations so unique they are known to exist in only 6 other places on earth. Billowing volcanic ash from ancient eruptions far greater than Mt. Saint Helens welded itself together by intense heat, then slowly eroded through wind and water into fantastically sculpted shapes."

                                                             Norin's turn to drive!

                                                                            Yucca

                                                                      Look up!

Norin treated us to New York style pizza in Deming, New Mexico!

Pablo and his wife Danielle treated us to the Superbowl feast I mentioned in an earlier update.     Pablo is from Nogales, Mexico. He spoke of his experience being Mexican and an American. Is he American? Is he Mexican? I agree with Pablo that what matters more is our relationships with each other.  We spoke about the history of New Mexico. It was owned by Spain, then Mexico, then the States. Pablo saw a shirt in town that stated: "New Mexico: It's not new and it's not Mexico".

  1. The hike looks so inviting! Like the fact that the " facilities" en route are clearly marked. Helps with the planning.......
In naming this state, " New Mexico"... one wonders what was the rationale for doing so!
