From interpretative signs by Red Rocks trail:
We were given permission to hike the Red Rocks trail. No photos are permitted on Pueblo lands.
We purchased a pot from Joseph Waquie in front of the visitors' center. He learned to make pots from watching his mother. His mother has passed away and he makes pottery to keep the family tradition. It took him ten steps to make our pot. He mixes volcanic sand (from the west) with fine sand so the pot does not get crack. He bakes the pot in the traditional way over an open fire, rather than in a kiln.
Joseph explained the meaning of the colours and images on our pot. The pot resembles the shape of a kiva and its' opening has some steps to show the kiva's entrance. Kivas have been of particular interest to me since our visit to Mesa Verde, Colorado.
The house by the church and convento was built in the 19th century.
