University of Arizona Museum of Art

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

Pfeiffer, Kitt and the Kress Family helped to establish the University of Arizona Museum of Art.

To determine the pieces of art we photograph for our blog, we tend to let the art dictate the choice i.e. a favourite artist, a particular style, an artistic statement or an artist we have "met" before in another gallery.  Jonathan and I often view art independent of each other then, later, we revisit a piece together to seek the other's perspective or to share a piece that spoke to one of us.  We often bring different photos to the blog, for example, today, Jonathan gave the retablos much of his attention whereas I gave them a cursory glance, staying longer with Lipchitz's sculptures and the Japanese prints.

The University of Arizona Repertory Theatre shares a plaza with the Museum of Art:
Leo & Sonja treated us to a production of Waiting for Godot at the Rogue Theatre (Thursday, January 22). Matt Bowdren who played Estragon is a teaching artist with the University of Arizona Repertory Theatre.

The following photos are from The Turquoise Trail, a historical walking tour of downtown Tucson:

This panel, depicting the arrival of the Spanish, used to be displayed on the front of the Jácome Department store in downtown Tucson. When the store was demolished in the 1970s, the Jácome family donated the art to the new convention center.

  1. Tuscon may not be the biggest city in Arizona but for it's size there is a marvelous selection of museums and heritage spots of all sorts !
